Title: On Divine Liturgy & the Rule of Faith
Abstract: Our first Table Talk presented the secularization thesis, explored the way Charles Taylor has shifted the trajectory of that theory, interjected Mary Eberstadt's "Family Factor" into the narrative of secularization, and briefly discussed the role of beauty in a secular age. Our second Table Talk presented the Russian Orthodox theologian Fr George's Florovsky and his "Neopatristic synthesis", that is, his call to return to the Fathers and acquire their mind so that we can faithfully and creatively respond to the questions posed to the Church by our secular age. In this third Table Talk, we'll introduce "liturgical theology", a project initiated by Fr. Alexander Schmemann, another Russian Orthodox theologian (also a friend and colleague of Florovsky). And then we'll defend liturgical theology's emphasis on the primacy of liturgy and begin to construct a synthesis and enlargement of the two projects put forth by Florovsky and Schmemann by turning to a more recent project developed by the Methodist theologian Abraham William: "Canonical Theism."
