4th Annual Inklings Lecture by Ralph Wood: "G. K. Chesterton: Father of the Inklings"

Feast of St Philip the Apostle & One of the Seven Deacons

FOR OUR fourth annual Inklings Oktoberfest, Ralph Wood will be presenting the annual Inklings Lecture on G. K. Chesterton as the Father of the Inklings. The lecture will be at 6:30 pm on Saturday, Oct. 20 at Journey the Way, a local church just around the corner from Eighth Day Books and our headquarters.

Immediately following the lecture, we'll proceed to Eighth Day Books to continue the weekend celebration of the 30th anniversary of Eighth Day Books. Dr. Wood will be signing his books, Chris Farha is providing her infamous hors d'oeuvres, and libations will be provided.

Here is Dr. Wood's description of the lecture:

Not everyone knows of the immense debt that Dorothy L. Sayers, J. R. R. Tolkien, and C. S. Lewis owed to G. K. Chesterton. It was so profound, in fact, that Chesterton is worthy to be called the father of the Inklings. As we shall see, he taught Sayers to regard the Church, not as a moribund institution for new and old fogies, but as the most exciting and interesting Thing on earth, the one Body that could command her total loyalty. So did Chesterton’s help convince Tolkien that fairy tales open the doors of the imagination to RECOVERY, ESCAPE, CONSOLATION. Lewis attributed his return to the Church to his reading of Chesterton’s Everlasting Man, a book whose depths we have barely begun to fathom.\

We hope to see you at the lecture and at the bookstore!
