FLOROVSKY LECTURE ABSTRACT
The inaugural Florovsky Lecture is offered in honor of the late Fr. Matthew Baker who spent so much of his academic career – cut far too short by tragic circumstances – tirelessly promoting Fr. Georges Florovsky. Consciously following in his footsteps, this lecture will answer two questions. First, who is Florovsky? We’ve launched an annual lecture in his honor and an annual event named after him. That’s no minor undertaking (it’s actually our most comprehensive and expensive undertaking to date) so we’d better have a very good reason. Introducing his life as a man with a mission for our secular age will convince you that he is worthy of the honor. And second, following the tradition of the conclusion to every Hall of Men and Sisters of Sophia lecture, what would the hero or heroine – in this instance, Fr. Georges Florovsky – have to say to us about cultural renewal if he were to step down from the cloud of witnesses and visit us at this banquet in Wichita, KS on July 10 in the year of our Lord 2018? Come learn about a man with a mission to renew culture in a secular age. We promise you’ll walk away with a much clearer understanding of and appreciation for the mission of Eighth Day Institute. Plus you’ll enjoy a fancy dinner with a four-stringed quartet and the standard Eighth Day libations in conjunction with the release of a new Cloud of Witnesses pint glass: “Fr. Georges Florovsky: An Ecumenical Father of the Church.”
