The Books of Eighth Day Institute: An Alphabetical Collection Selected by Director Doom

Feast of Sts John and Symeon the Fool for Christ

EDI_Books_Square.jpegI'VE PACKED and unpacked thousands and thousands of books, hauled as many around the country for book tables, set up two small bookstores, traveled twelve hours just to make a stab-in-the-dark bid to purchase a monastery library, all while working for Mr. Warren Farha of Eighth Day Books – he and his staff continue to travel the country peddling books out of the blue Eighth Day van, a sort of modern-day version of Roger Mifflin’s “caravan of culture” (see The Parnassus on Wheels in Chapter Three). I’ve catalogued small libraries. When moving, I’ve burdened family members, friends and students with boxes and boxes full of books. I’ve nearly driven my wife mad with books encroaching on every nook and cranny of our home. Apart from the house, I’ve spent more money on books than any other material possession. I confess, I’m an addict, and it wouldn’t be out of line for me to introduce myself as such: “Hi, my name is Erin and I’m a bibliophile.”

I penned those opening lines back in 2012 as the first paragraph of the Foreword (“Bibliomania”) to our first issue of Synaxis (“The Book”). (You can read the whole thing here. Sign up to become a new Eighth Day Member at any level before Aug. 4, and I’ll send you a complimentary copy of the whole issue.) Without an ounce of shame, I admit that five years later I’m still a bibliophile.

I’ve been buying books since I was eight years old. I accumulated the most books during my eight years of employment at Eighth Day Books (1997-2005). But I’ve continued to acquire them, especially during the time spent writing my PhD thesis. My wife and children have been so patient and gracious with my seemingly never-ending studies and the time-consuming work of developing EDI that, had I not moved most of my library to EDI’s headquarters at The Ladder, I may have been given the boot myself. My fiction (400+ volumes) and about 100 other books have remained at home; the other 5000+ volumes currently reside at The Ladder.

I’m launching our summer fundraising campaign today. In preparation for this campaign, several board members and I have spent some time thinking through our membership perks. We’ve made several changes (you can see them here; you can sign up here), and one of them significantly impacted the physical space of our headquarters at The Ladder. We’re opening up The Ladder and its 5000+ volume library (plus academic journals and thousands of articles) to all Eighth Day Members at the Patron level and above. (If you don’t live near Wichita, please accept our apologies. In addition to supporting a great cause, there are many other valuable benefits to membership, including a growing library of digital content and a significant discount to the Eighth Day Symposium.)

In light of this significant change to membership benefits, I’ve spent quite a bit of time reorganizing The Ladder’s Library. The stacks and stacks of books on the second floor were combined with the first floor books and then organized and categorized. 120 linear feet of bookshelves have been added and now all the books have a new home on the shelves.

During the process of moving those thousands of books around over the last couple of weeks, I remembered that Image Journal once published a list of their top 100 books. Eighth Day Books once did the same thing (I'll try to get a hold of that list and update this post with a link when I do). I performed a similar exercise, but far more humble in scale, when I wrote a piece for that original issue of Synaxis titled “The Books of My Life.” In that article I selected and commented on nineteen of the most influential books of my life. So I decided to extend my list of nineteen books. I began setting aside the books I deemed most important and I didn’t keep count. When I finished, after adding some books from my small library at home, I had multiple stacks that tallied in at well over 400 volumes. Instead of spending time cutting the stacks down, I decided to just start entering them. Counting multi-volume sets as a single book, when all was said and done the count stands at 388!

For all the folks who live in the Wichita area, consider this list a teaser for Patron membership. This is a sampling – just shy of 8% of the full library – of the sort of library you would have access to during regular business hours. Benefactors will have unlimited access to the upstairs with a private room for meetings, an office space for study, the second half of the library, and journals and articles, plus check-out privileges.

I’ve designated where each title is found: “1” for the first floor, “2” for the second floor, “O” for my office, and “H” for my home. And I’ve created a separate PDF document, in case you want to download and/or print the list out.

I hope you’ll support our work through membership. But I especially hope you’ll become a Patron or a Benefactor so I can see you reading and socializing at The Ladder!
